📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study evaluates the implementation of computer-based testing in junior secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, North Central Nigeria. Computer-based tests are increasingly deployed for national and school-based assessments in Nigeria following the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board's pioneering adoption of the modality. Understanding implementation quality at the junior secondary level is critical for managing student preparedness for higher-stakes assessments. A mixed-methods design was adopted, combining a survey of 90 teachers and ICT coordinators from 15 FCT junior secondary schools with focus group discussions with student groups. Findings reveal infrastructure disparities between urban and peri-urban schools, with peri-urban schools suffering more frequent connectivity disruptions and device malfunctions during test sessions. Teachers report insufficient advance preparation time and poor technical support during examinations. Students from lower-income households demonstrate higher test anxiety due to unfamiliarity with CBT interfaces. The study recommends that the FCT Education Secretariat establish a dedicated CBT infrastructure audit unit, provide pre-test familiarisation sessions for students, and create technical support protocols for examination days. Keywords: computer-based testing, junior secondary school, FCT Abuja, assessment technology, CBT implementation
