Evaluation of Gas Compression Technology Options for Associated Gas Utilisation in Marginal Fields of Niger Delta

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Selecting appropriate compression technology for associated gas utilisation in marginal oil fields is a critical engineering and commercial decision affecting project viability and operational sustainability. This study evaluates compression technology options applicable to associated gas utilisation projects in Niger Delta marginal fields, specifically examining screw compressors, reciprocating compressors, and rotary vane compressors across a range of gas production rate scenarios. The research employs a comparative technical and economic evaluation methodology, developing performance models for each compression technology type at standardised design flow rates of 2, 5, and 10 MMscfd, reflecting the typical associated gas production range for marginal fields in Bayelsa and Delta states. Evaluation criteria include specific power consumption (kW per MMscfd), reliability history in tropical operating environments, maintenance skill requirements, footprint and weight constraints for swamp and land locations, and capital and operating cost profiles. Data sources include vendor technical proposals, reliability databases from comparable installations, and operational experience interviews with marginal field operators. Findings indicate that screw compressors offer superior specific power efficiency and lower maintenance complexity at flow rates below 5 MMscfd, making them the preferred option for most marginal field contexts, while reciprocating compressors become competitive at higher pressures exceeding 500 psig discharge pressure. Recommendations include development of a standardised compression technology selection framework for the NUPRC and Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), and preferred vendor pre-qualification lists to reduce procurement lead times for marginal field projects.
