Evaluation of Gas Compressor Station Operations and Efficiency in the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System

Compressor stations are the mechanical backbone of long-distance gas transmission pipelines, and their operational efficiency directly determines pipeline throughput capacity and energy consumption. This study evaluates the operational performance and energy efficiency of compressor stations along the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS), focusing on the Eriemu, Ovade, and Sagamu booster compression stations. The research employs an engineering performance analysis methodology, utilising compressor operational data logs, vibration monitoring reports, and thermodynamic performance calculations. Key performance indicators evaluated include polytropic efficiency, volumetric efficiency, power consumption per unit of gas compressed, and mean time between maintenance interventions. The study examines the effects of anti-surge control valve operation, inter-stage cooling efficiency, and lube oil system performance on overall compression efficiency. A significant aspect of the research involves comparing observed performance against original design specifications to quantify performance degradation over the operational life of the equipment. Findings indicate an average polytropic efficiency decline of 8 to 12 percent across the surveyed stations relative to original nameplate efficiency, with the highest degradation observed at the oldest station. Recommendations include performance restoration overhauls for underperforming compressor units, implementation of variable speed drive technology for demand-responsive compression, and adoption of energy efficiency benchmarking against ISO 13631 standards. This study provides operational performance intelligence relevant to gas transmission system operators in Nigeria.
