📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Continuous improvement of gas processing plant operational efficiency is a professional imperative for midstream operators seeking to maximise throughput and minimise operating costs in a competitive commercial environment. This study evaluates the design and effectiveness of operational efficiency improvement programmes implemented at gas processing plants in Delta State, focusing on facilities in the Ughelli and Kwale processing complexes. The research employs a programme evaluation methodology, analysing efficiency metrics data before and after improvement programme implementation, reviewing improvement project documentation, and conducting structured interviews with plant operations managers and process engineers. Efficiency dimensions assessed include gas plant utilisation factors, liquid recovery efficiency for natural gas liquids (NGLs), fuel gas consumption per unit of throughput, and maintenance-related production deferment rates. The study examines the management systems supporting the improvement programmes, including performance monitoring dashboards, root cause analysis protocols, and cross-functional improvement teams. Findings demonstrate that plants with structured improvement programmes achieved average throughput efficiency gains of 8 to 12 percent over a three-year programme period, with the highest gains attributed to process heat integration projects and inlet separator capacity optimisation. Facilities without structured programmes showed no statistically significant efficiency improvement over the same period. Recommendations include adoption of a formal operational excellence management system, integration of process simulation tools into routine performance monitoring, and industry-wide sharing of efficiency improvement learnings through the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) platform. Keywords: gas processing, operational efficiency, improvement programme, Delta State, NGL recovery.
