Examination Malpractice and Its Implications for Educational Standards in Secondary Schools in Imo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the prevalence of examination malpractice and its implications for educational standards in secondary schools in Imo State, South East Nigeria. Examination malpractice remains one of the most persistent integrity challenges in Nigeria's education system, undermining the validity of academic credentials and distorting the relationship between effort and reward. In Imo State, despite various anti-malpractice initiatives by the West African Examinations Council and state education authorities, reported incidents continue to recur. A descriptive survey design was employed, administering questionnaires to 400 Senior Secondary School Three students, 100 teachers, and 30 examination invigilators across 20 schools in Owerri, Orlu, and Okigwe zones. Malpractice prevalence is assessed through anonymous self-report instruments and documented WAEC sanction records. Its implications for standards are analysed through comparison of school-based and external examination performance differentials. Chi-square and regression analyses were applied. Results reveal that malpractice is widespread and normalised among a significant proportion of students, with peer pressure and fear of failure identified as primary drivers. Schools with large performance gaps between internal assessments and WAEC results show the highest malpractice risk indicators. The study concludes that examination malpractice significantly inflates internal performance metrics while masking genuine learning deficits. It recommends that Imo State introduce a school integrity index and subject schools with large internal-external performance differentials to enhanced examination supervision and remedial curriculum support.
