Examining the Contribution of Air Transport to Economic Development in Imo State

Air transport, while often associated with international connectivity, plays an increasingly important role in domestic economic development, facilitating business travel, trade, and investment flows between Nigerian states. This study examines the contribution of air transport to economic development in Imo State, focusing on the Sam Mbakwe International Airport in Owerri, South East Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was employed, collecting data from 120 business travellers, airline operators, and state economic development officials through structured questionnaires and documentary analysis of airport traffic statistics. The study measures passenger throughput trends, business investment linkages, tourism receipts attributed to air connectivity, and stakeholder perceptions of airport service quality. Findings show that passenger traffic at the Owerri airport has grown by approximately 35 percent between 2020 and 2024, with business travel comprising over 60 percent of demand. Respondents in the banking, oil services, and agribusiness sectors report that direct flight connectivity to Lagos and Abuja is critical to their investment decisions in Imo State. However, airport infrastructure limitations, including a single runway, limited night landing capability, and inadequate cargo facilities, constrain growth potential. Recommendations include the expansion and upgrading of airport facilities, the attraction of additional carriers through competitive landing fee structures, and the integration of the airport into the Imo State investment promotion strategy.
