Examining the Management of Motor Parks and Its Effect on Urban Transport Organisation in Kogi State

Motor parks serve as critical nodes in Nigeria's urban transport network, organising the departure and arrival of commercial vehicles and providing a structured interface between operators and passengers. This study examines the management of motor parks and its effects on urban transport organisation in Kogi State, situated at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers in the North Central zone. A descriptive survey design was employed, collecting data from 140 transport operators, park managers, and commuters at motor parks in Lokoja, Kabba, and Okene through structured questionnaires and observational field notes. The study evaluates park governance structures, fare regulation mechanisms, facilities management, and the role of transport unions in motor park administration. Findings reveal that motor parks in the state are predominantly managed by transport union affiliates rather than state government agencies, leading to inconsistent service standards and fare extortion in some locations. Physical facilities are described as inadequate, with most parks lacking toilet facilities, covered waiting areas, or proper drainage. Revenue collection is informal and opaque, with little evidence of reinvestment in infrastructure. Passenger safety within parks is also flagged as a concern, with petty crime incidents reported by 34 percent of surveyed commuters. The study recommends the formalisation of park management through licensed private operators under government oversight, investment in basic passenger facilities, and transparent revenue management frameworks.
