Factors Influencing Food Choices Among Adolescents in Urban Communities of Osun State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the factors influencing food choices among adolescents in urban communities of Osun State, South West Nigeria. Adolescence is a critical period during which dietary habits are shaped by peer influence, family practices, media exposure, and access to food. Poor food choices during this stage increase the risk of nutrition-related non-communicable diseases in adulthood. Using a descriptive survey design, the study targets adolescents aged 13 to 18 in secondary schools within Osogbo and Ife East local government areas. Data were collected from 290 respondents using a structured questionnaire. Objectives include identifying the key determinants of adolescent food choices, assessing the quality of their diets, and examining the role of family and school environments in shaping dietary behaviour. Recent literature from South West Nigeria identifies affordability, taste preference, and peer pressure as dominant drivers of poor dietary choices among urban adolescents. Data were analysed using frequency tables, mean scores, and multiple regression analysis. The Social Ecological Model frames the study by accounting for individual, interpersonal, institutional, and community-level determinants of food behaviour. Findings are anticipated to reveal significant influences of peer behaviour and fast food marketing on adolescent dietary patterns. Recommendations address the Osun State Ministry of Health, Home Economics educators, and school management to strengthen adolescent nutrition education. Keywords: food choices, adolescents, dietary behaviour, urban communities, Osun State.
