Financial Inclusion, Business Education, and Economic Empowerment of Women in Rural Communities in the South East Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria

This study investigated the intersecting relationships among financial inclusion, Business Education, and the economic empowerment of women in rural communities in the South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Women in rural Nigeria continue to face significant barriers to economic participation, including limited access to formal financial services, inadequate business knowledge, and structural gender inequalities. Business Education, as a system of knowledge and skills development, combined with enhanced financial inclusion, holds transformative potential for advancing women economic agency. This study fills a critical gap in the empirical literature at the nexus of these three constructs in the rural South East context. Grounded in the Feminist Empowerment Theory, the Financial Inclusion Framework, and the Human Capital Theory, a longitudinal panel design was adopted across three waves of data collection over thirty-six months in rural communities in Enugu, Imo, and Anambra States. A stratified panel sample of 480 rural women who had received Business Education through formal or non-formal channels was followed across the study period. Validated instruments measuring financial inclusion depth, Business Education outcomes, and economic empowerment indicators were used. Panel data regression, difference-in-differences analysis, and qualitative life narrative analysis were employed. Findings reveal a strong synergistic effect: women who combined Business Education training with access to microfinance demonstrated economic empowerment outcomes three times higher than those with only one of these factors. Social capital moderates the empowerment process significantly. The study makes a landmark contribution to the evidence base for integrated Business Education and financial inclusion policy and recommends a combined intervention model for rural women economic empowerment.
