Pedagogical Innovation and Learning Outcomes in Business Education in Nigerian Universities: A Nationwide Experimental Study

This study conducted a nationwide experimental investigation of the effects of pedagogical innovation on learning outcomes in Business Education in Nigerian universities. Pedagogical innovation, encompassing the deliberate adoption of novel instructional designs, technologies, and assessment practices, is increasingly positioned as the primary lever for improving learning quality in higher education. However, large-scale experimental evidence on the effects of multiple pedagogical innovations in Business Education across diverse Nigerian institutional contexts does not exist, limiting the evidence base for instructional policy. Drawing on the Social Constructivist Theory, the Transformative Learning Theory, and the Theory of Active Learning, a multi-site randomized controlled trial design was employed across twenty-four universities spanning all six geopolitical zones. Three innovation conditions, namely flipped classroom, case-based learning, and collaborative project-based learning, were compared against conventional lecture-based instruction in a factorial experimental design. The population comprised 4,800 300-level Business Education students. A randomized sample of 1,440 students was assigned to four experimental conditions. Validated instruments measuring cognitive, affective, and skill-based learning outcomes were administered as pretests, posttests, and six-month retention tests. Multilevel mixed ANOVA and Hierarchical Linear Modeling were employed for analysis. Findings reveal that collaborative project-based learning produces the strongest and most durable learning outcomes across all three outcome dimensions, with significant interaction effects involving institutional type and geographic zone. The study provides the strongest experimental evidence to date on pedagogical innovation in Nigerian Business Education and recommends a phased national rollout of project-based learning.
