Fleet Management Practices and Delivery Performance of Logistics Companies in Ibadan, Oyo State

This study investigates the relationship between fleet management practices and delivery performance among logistics companies in Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria. Effective fleet management, encompassing vehicle maintenance scheduling, route planning, driver supervision, and fuel monitoring, is foundational to reliable and cost-efficient logistics operations. However, many mid-sized logistics firms in Ibadan continue to manage their fleets informally, relying on reactive maintenance and manual route assignment, which leads to frequent breakdowns and missed delivery windows. Using a descriptive survey design, structured questionnaires were administered to 95 fleet supervisors, operations managers, and drivers across 12 logistics companies in Ibadan. Fleet management quality is assessed through maintenance frequency compliance, GPS utilisation rate, driver training regularity, and fuel efficiency monitoring. Delivery performance is measured by on-time delivery percentage, vehicle downtime days per month, and delivery cost per kilometre. Regression analysis is used to determine which fleet management practices most significantly predict delivery performance. The study draws on fleet management frameworks and recent logistics operations literature. Findings are expected to demonstrate that preventive maintenance scheduling and GPS route optimisation have the strongest positive effects on delivery outcomes. Recommendations will be directed at logistics company owners and management on cost-effective fleet digitalisation options, as well as at industry regulators and fleet insurance providers operating in the South West logistics market.
