French Language as a Tool for Community Development: A Study of Alliance Francaise Programmes in Port Harcourt

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Alliance Francaise centres in Nigeria occupy a distinctive position as non-governmental cultural institutions delivering French language education, francophone cultural programming, and community development initiatives beyond the formal school system. This study examines the community development functions of Alliance Francaise Port Harcourt, investigating participation patterns, programme impact perceptions, and the organisation's role in promoting French language and francophone culture in the South-South geopolitical zone. A qualitative research design was employed, combining semi-structured interviews with 35 programme participants and 8 Alliance Francaise staff members, supplemented by review of programme reports and attendance records. Participant profiles, motivations for enrolment, and self-assessed language and cultural learning outcomes were documented. Results reveal a diverse participant base spanning secondary school students, university graduates, professionals in oil-related industries, and returnee migrants with francophone country experience. Instrumental motivations related to employment in the oil and gas sector and ECOWAS mobility dominated, alongside cultural interest motivations. Participants rated oral communication training and cultural events as the most valuable programme components. Community partnerships with secondary schools and universities in Rivers State were identified as underexplored opportunities for broader impact. The study argues that Alliance Francaise Port Harcourt occupies a strategically important position in the South-South French language ecosystem and recommends formal collaboration agreements with state educational authorities.
