German Language and Entrepreneurship: Opportunities for Nigerian Small Business Owners in the Export Sector

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study explores the relationship between German language competency and entrepreneurial opportunities in the Nigerian export sector, focusing on small and medium enterprise owners in Oyo State, South West Nigeria. German-speaking countries represent significant potential markets for Nigerian artisanal goods, agricultural products, and creative industry exports, but the inability of most Nigerian SME owners to communicate in German is a recognised barrier to market penetration. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, surveying 80 SME owners who had participated in a six-month German language and export readiness programme offered through a state government partnership, and conducting focus group discussions with 20 participants to explore business outcomes attributable to the programme. Quantitative measures assess proficiency gains and changes in export behaviour, while qualitative data explore entrepreneurial confidence, market strategy shifts, and the perceived role of German language in business development. Findings indicate that participants who achieved A2 proficiency in German reported increased capacity to engage directly with German buyers at international trade fairs and to communicate product specifications without third-party interpretation. The study recommends the integration of German language training into national export promotion frameworks and SME development programmes. Keywords: German language, entrepreneurship, export sector, SMEs, Oyo State.
