German Language Proficiency and Career Prospects in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Sector

This study examines the relationship between German language proficiency and career prospects within Nigeria's civil aviation sector, with a particular focus on aviation professionals based at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Germany is among the most significant sources of international air passengers to Nigeria, and several major German aviation entities, including Lufthansa and DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung, maintain active operational and partnership relationships with Nigerian aviation institutions. The study employs a descriptive survey design, administering structured questionnaires to 120 aviation professionals across roles including air traffic controllers, ground handling staff, commercial aviation managers, and airline operations personnel. The questionnaire assesses German language competency levels, frequency of German language encounters in professional duties, and perceptions of German proficiency as a career advancement factor. Findings indicate that German language encounters are most frequent among commercial and customer service personnel at German airline operating desks and among aviation management professionals engaged in bilateral technical cooperation. Awareness of German language as a career differentiator is relatively high among respondents, with 68 percent stating that German proficiency would positively affect their career trajectory. The study recommends the incorporation of German language training in the curricula of Nigerian aviation training institutes. Keywords: German language, civil aviation, career prospects, Lagos, Abuja.
