Governance Quality in Nigerian State Universities: Board Composition and Academic Performance in North Central Institutions

This study examines the relationship between governance quality and academic performance outcomes in state universities located in the North Central geopolitical zone of Nigeria. University governance, encompassing the composition and effectiveness of governing councils, has significant implications for academic programme quality, financial management, and institutional reputation. Persistent challenges including irregular council meetings, political interference in appointments, and inadequate accountability mechanisms have been identified as factors undermining university governance across Nigerian states. Drawing on higher education governance theory and the National Universities Commission's governance guidelines, this study evaluates how council composition, independence, and activity levels relate to institutional performance indicators including graduate output, accreditation outcomes, and research productivity. A mixed-method design is adopted, combining document analysis of university governance reports with interviews of council members and academic staff at five state universities in the North Central zone. The study anticipates that universities with more independent and professionally diverse councils demonstrate stronger academic performance outcomes. Findings will assist the National Universities Commission, state governments, and university councils in reforming higher education governance.
