📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This research develops a green manufacturing strategy for a cement plant in Ogun State, South West Nigeria, addressing the environmental performance challenges inherent in cement production while maintaining commercial competitiveness. Cement manufacturing is one of the most energy-intensive and carbon-emitting industrial sectors globally, accounting for approximately seven to eight percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, and Nigerian cement producers face growing pressure from regulators, financiers, and international trading partners to improve environmental performance. This study conducts a comprehensive environmental performance baseline assessment covering energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, particulate matter emissions, water consumption, and solid waste generation, benchmarked against the International Finance Corporation Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines for cement manufacturing. An opportunity identification analysis evaluates fifteen potential green manufacturing interventions across energy efficiency, alternative fuel substitution, material efficiency, water conservation, and emissions control dimensions. Options are prioritised using a multi-criteria matrix incorporating abatement cost, implementation feasibility, emissions reduction potential, and regulatory compliance benefit. The study recommends a phased green manufacturing strategy centred on clinker factor reduction through increased fly ash blending, investment in waste heat recovery power generation, and installation of upgraded bag filter dust collection systems.
