Quality Management System Audit in a Federal Government Printing Press in Abuja

This study conducts a quality management system audit at a federal government printing press in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria, assessing the degree of ISO 9001:2015 conformance and identifying priority improvement actions. Government printing organisations play a critical role in producing official documents, currency, passports, and secure printing products that require exceptionally high quality standards and documented process controls. This research employs an ISO 9001:2015 gap analysis methodology, assessing current quality management practices against all ten clauses of the standard using a structured audit checklist administered across four production departments and three support functions. The audit team conducted document reviews, process observations, and personnel interviews over a three-week assessment period. Results show an overall conformance level of forty-nine percent, with the strongest performance in quality control clause requirements and the weakest in risk-based thinking, performance evaluation, and context of the organisation clauses. The absence of a documented risk register and the lack of systematically collected process performance data are identified as the most critical gaps. A prioritised improvement roadmap is developed, grouping actions into immediate, short-term, and medium-term categories aligned with resource availability constraints. Recommendations emphasise management system documentation development, internal auditor training, and leadership engagement in management review activities.
