Home Management Practices and Family Wellbeing Among Rural Households in Borno State

This study investigates home management practices and their relationship with family wellbeing among rural households in Borno State, North East Nigeria. Home management encompasses resource allocation, time management, decision-making, and household organisation, all of which are pivotal to family stability. The study employs a descriptive survey design, targeting rural households in Konduga and Gwoza local government areas. A structured questionnaire was administered to 300 household heads and their spouses selected through systematic random sampling. Objectives include assessing the level of home management knowledge among respondents, identifying prevailing practices, and determining their effect on family wellbeing indicators such as health, nutrition, and financial stability. Recent literature highlights persistent gaps in home management competencies among rural populations in conflict-affected regions of North East Nigeria. Data were analysed using mean ratings and chi-square tests. The Family Systems Theory provides the conceptual anchor for the study, recognising the household as an interconnected system in which management decisions affect all members. Findings are expected to reveal low levels of formal home management practices and their adverse consequences for family outcomes. Recommendations are addressed to extension workers, community development agencies, and state home economics educators to enhance outreach and adult literacy programmes.
