Influence of Socioeconomic Status on Sports Participation Among Secondary School Students in Akwa Ibom State

Socioeconomic status is a well-documented determinant of sports participation opportunities among school-age populations, influencing access to equipment, facilities, coaching, and transportation to sporting events. This study investigates the influence of socioeconomic status on sports participation among secondary school students in Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria. A correlational survey design was employed, with data collected from 360 students across 12 secondary schools in three senatorial districts. Socioeconomic status was operationalised through parental occupation, household income, and educational attainment indices, while sports participation was measured using a structured activity log and school sports enrolment records. Pearson correlation and regression analyses were applied to examine the relationship between variables. Findings reveal a statistically significant positive association between higher socioeconomic status and both the frequency and diversity of sports participation. Students from low-income households are significantly less likely to participate in school sports clubs and interschool competitions, primarily due to inability to afford kit, transportation, and registration fees. Government-assisted schools serving lower socioeconomic populations report substantially less sports equipment compared to fee-paying schools. The study identifies financial barriers, distance to sports venues, and domestic chores responsibilities as compounding barriers for students from economically disadvantaged households. Recommendations include introduction of subsidised sports programmes, provision of free equipment through government intervention, and strengthening of school-based inclusive sports policies.
