Information Technology Project Management Practices in the Nigerian Construction Industry: Evidence from Abuja, FCT

Information technology project management discipline has become increasingly integral to construction project delivery in Nigerian urban centres, where digitally managed scheduling, cost control, and stakeholder communication have improved project outcomes. This study examines IT project management practices among construction firms operating in Abuja, FCT, investigating the extent of adoption of formal project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 and the Project Management Body of Knowledge framework. A survey instrument was administered to 95 project managers and IT coordinators in construction companies handling public and private contracts in Abuja. Data analysis focused on planning practices, risk management processes, stakeholder communication tools, and project closure evaluations. Results reveal that only 38 percent of respondent firms follow a documented IT project management methodology consistently, while 54 percent rely on informal approaches adapted from general construction project management traditions. The absence of certified IT project management professionals within construction firms was identified as the primary driver of methodology gaps. The study also documents a statistically significant correlation between formal IT project management adoption and successful project delivery within budget. Practical recommendations include mandatory IT project management certification requirements for publicly funded construction contracts in the FCT and training partnerships with the Project Management Institute's Nigeria Chapter.
