Insomnia and Quality of Life Among Healthcare Workers at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, Benue State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Healthcare workers frequently experience sleep disturbances due to shift work, workload, and occupational stress, with significant consequences for both personal well-being and patient safety. This study evaluates the prevalence of insomnia and its relationship to quality of life among healthcare workers at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, in Benue State, North Central Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study will recruit 220 staff including nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists through proportional random sampling. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) will assess insomnia symptoms, while the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) will measure health-related quality of life across physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains. Shift schedules, years of service, and professional cadre will be documented as covariates. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis will examine the insomnia-quality of life relationship. Studies in Nigerian tertiary hospitals have linked insomnia with burnout and medical errors, underscoring the public health relevance of this inquiry. Recommendations will target occupational health departments, hospital management, and the Federal Ministry of Health regarding sleep health policies for clinical staff. Keywords: insomnia, quality of life, healthcare workers, Makurdi, Benue State
