Knowledge and Practice of Diabetic Foot Care Among Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi

Background: Diabetic foot complications are a leading cause of amputation in Nigeria, with nursing management constituting a critical preventive intervention. Aim: This study assessed nurses' knowledge and practice of diabetic foot care at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, North West Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey recruited 80 nurses from medical and endocrine units through stratified random sampling. A validated 25-item knowledge questionnaire and an observational practice checklist were used. Data were analysed with SPSS version 25. Results: Knowledge of diabetic foot care was adequate in 52% of nurses, while practice was satisfactory in only 40%. Key deficits were found in foot inspection frequency, patient education on footwear selection, and early wound documentation. Nurses who had attended diabetes nursing workshops demonstrated significantly better knowledge and practice scores. Conclusion: Diabetic foot care knowledge and practice remain below optimal levels. Mandatory diabetes nursing continuing education, inclusion of standardised foot assessment tools in ward protocols, and patient and caregiver education programmes are recommended.
