Knowledge and Utilisation of Family Planning Methods Among Women of Reproductive Age at Primary Health Centre, Calabar South

Background: Nigeria's total fertility rate remains among the highest globally, with family planning uptake significantly below targets, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities. Nursing-delivered family planning education is integral to improving uptake. Aim: This study assessed knowledge and utilisation of family planning methods among women of reproductive age attending a primary health centre in Calabar South, Cross River State. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey recruited 110 women aged 18 to 45 years through systematic random sampling. A structured questionnaire assessed awareness, method knowledge, and current use. Data were analysed with SPSS version 26. Results: Ninety-two percent of respondents demonstrated awareness of at least one family planning method; however, current utilisation was reported by only 49%. Barriers to use included husband disapproval, fear of side effects, and religious concerns. Long-acting reversible contraceptives were poorly understood by 70% of respondents. Conclusion: Awareness is insufficient to drive utilisation. The study recommends targeted nurse-led counselling that addresses spousal barriers, method-specific counselling, and community engagement strategies to improve family planning uptake in South South Nigerian contexts.
