Management of Feedlot Cattle Operations for Maximum Profitability in Northern Nigeria

This study examines the management principles and economic optimisation of feedlot cattle operations in northern Nigeria, with a focus on improving profitability in Kano and Kaduna States. Feedlot fattening of cattle is an increasingly important enterprise in northern Nigeria's beef production value chain, driven by growing urban demand for high-quality beef. However, profit margins are highly sensitive to feed cost management, purchase weight, fattening period duration, and market price timing, all of which require professional management knowledge that is often inadequately applied by small and medium feedlot operators. This study uses a combination of enterprise budget analysis and survey of 30 feedlot operations of varying scales in Kano and Kaduna to assess current management practices, identify optimisation opportunities, and develop an improved management framework. Key management variables including feeder cattle selection, ration formulation, pen management, health protocols, and market timing are assessed against benchmarks. Partial budget analysis quantifies the financial impact of identified management improvements. Findings reveal that feed conversion efficiency is the most variable and improvable parameter, with sampled feedlots achieving ratios ranging from 7 to 12 kilograms feed per kilogram gain against a best-practice benchmark of 6. Feeder cattle purchase weight and average daily gain are significantly correlated with return on capital. Three-monthly fattening cycles show higher annual return on capital than longer cycles. The study recommends a professional feedlot management guide incorporating ration optimisation, health protocols, and market timing strategies tailored to northern Nigerian conditions.
