Management of Library Resources in State Universal Basic Education Board Schools in Gombe State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study evaluated the management of library resources in schools under the Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board in Gombe State, North East Nigeria. School library resources are among the most important infrastructure elements for achieving the educational objectives of the Universal Basic Education programme, yet management of these resources in many states remains poorly documented. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from head teachers, library teachers, and school library supervisors in thirty public primary schools across four local government areas using questionnaires and observation schedules. The study found that most school libraries were managed by classroom teachers without library training, that book stock was outdated and insufficient relative to student enrolment, and that record-keeping for borrowing and returns was largely non-existent. The study recommended that the Board appoint trained library staff, fund the procurement of current instructional materials, and introduce a standardised resource management framework across all schools. Keywords: library resource management, SUBEB, basic education, Gombe State, school library.
