Management of Online Reputation for Nigerian Higher Education Institutions

This study examines online reputation management practices in Nigerian higher education institutions, assessing how universities manage their digital identity, respond to online criticism, and leverage digital platforms to attract students and resources. Nigerian universities face intense competition for students, faculty, and funding in an increasingly information-rich environment where rankings, student reviews, and social media commentary shape institutional reputation. This study uses a mixed-method design combining structured interviews with 22 communication directors, social media managers, and vice-chancellor liaison officers at 10 universities spanning federal, state, and private ownership categories across different geopolitical zones, with audit analysis of university websites, social media accounts, and Google reputation profiles. Findings reveal significant variation in online reputation management sophistication. Private universities, particularly those in Lagos and Abuja, maintain the most systematic social media presence and online reputation monitoring. Federal universities show institutional inertia in digital communication, with outdated websites and inconsistent social media management. Crisis reputation management, particularly around ASUU strikes, is handled poorly in 70 percent of sampled public universities. Student review platforms are monitored by fewer than 30 percent of institutions despite their growing influence on prospective student decisions. Proactive online reputation building through research profile visibility, alumni networks, and thought leadership content is rare. The study concludes that Nigerian universities require dedicated online reputation management capacity and recommends university communication departments invest in digital listening tools, proactive content strategy, and crisis communication readiness.
