Managing Hausa Language Digital Content Development for E-Learning Platforms in Nigeria

The expansion of e-learning platforms in Nigerian education creates both opportunities and challenges for the development and management of high-quality Hausa language digital content, which remains significantly underrepresented relative to English on major learning platforms. This study examines the professional challenges and management strategies associated with developing Hausa language digital learning content in Nigeria, drawing on the experiences of content developers, educational technology managers, and Hausa language specialists. A professional application research design was employed, using semi-structured interviews with 20 professionals engaged in Hausa digital content creation across four organisations: the NTA e-Learning Project, a Kano-based educational technology startup, the NOUN open distance learning platform, and the Global Educators Network Nigeria. Document review of content production workflows and quality assurance procedures supplemented the interview data. Findings identify key management challenges including shortage of professionals with combined Hausa language expertise and digital content production skills, absence of standardised Hausa orthographic conventions for digital environments, limited market data on Hausa e-learning demand, and inadequate funding for Hausa content development relative to English equivalents. Recommendations address investment in training programmes combining Hausa language expertise with digital content production skills, development of a Hausa digital orthography standards guide, creation of a market development fund for Hausa educational digital content, and advocacy for Hausa language inclusion requirements in government-funded e-learning initiatives.
