Managing Hausa Language Learning Resources for Distance Education Students at National Open University of Nigeria

Distance education provision for Hausa language students at the National Open University of Nigeria presents distinctive resource management challenges, as the effectiveness of language learning through open and distance learning platforms depends critically on the quality, accessibility, and cultural appropriateness of mediated learning resources. This study examines the management of Hausa language learning resources for distance education students at NOUN, evaluating resource quality, student access patterns, and institutional management practices. A professional management research design was employed, reviewing NOUN's Hausa language course materials, digital resource platforms, and student support infrastructure through document analysis and institutional interviews with 10 Hausa language faculty members, 4 distance education technology managers, and 2 quality assurance officers. A survey of 90 NOUN Hausa language students collected learner experience data on resource quality and accessibility. Findings reveal that most Hausa language course materials at NOUN were developed before 2018 and do not incorporate recent developments in Hausa language scholarship, contemporary Hausa literature, or digital language learning tools. Audio-visual resources in Hausa are particularly limited despite their established effectiveness for language learning in distance contexts. Student internet access in northern states constrains engagement with digital resources. Recommendations address a systematic review and update of NOUN Hausa language course materials, development of audio and audio-visual resources for Hausa language courses, investment in offline-accessible digital resource formats appropriate for low-connectivity northern Nigerian contexts, and professional development for Hausa language distance education course developers.
