Managing Hausa Language Preservation Initiatives in Government Cultural Institutions in Kano State

Government cultural institutions carry primary institutional responsibility for preserving and promoting Hausa language heritage through archiving, publication, research support, and public programming. This study examines the management of Hausa language preservation initiatives in Kano State's major cultural institutions, focusing on the Kano State History and Culture Bureau and the Centre for Hausa Cultural Studies. A professional management case study design was employed, reviewing institutional programme records, publication outputs, archive management systems, and budget allocations from 2019 to 2024. Interviews were conducted with 14 institutional managers, language officers, and cultural programme coordinators. The study assesses the comprehensiveness of ongoing preservation activities, adequacy of resourcing, and effectiveness of community engagement strategies. Findings reveal commendable documentation work in oral literature recording and dialect surveys, but significant gaps in digital archiving infrastructure, publication distribution, and community outreach programming. Budget constraints have restricted fieldwork activities and slowed publication of completed manuscript collections. Digital language tools are largely absent from preservation strategies. Recommendations address development of a comprehensive Hausa language digital archive infrastructure, establishment of an annual Hausa cultural heritage documentation fund, partnerships with international language documentation organisations, and community-based language champions programme to extend preservation reach beyond institutional boundaries in Kano State.
