Mothers’ Knowledge and Practice of Oral Rehydration Therapy for Diarrhoea Management in Children Under Five in Ondo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Background: Diarrhoeal disease remains a leading cause of child mortality in Nigeria, and correct use of oral rehydration therapy by caregivers significantly reduces mortality risk. Aim: This study assessed mothers' knowledge and practice of oral rehydration therapy for management of diarrhoea in children under five in selected communities in Ondo State, South West Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive community-based survey recruited 120 mothers of under-five children through multi-stage random sampling. An interviewer-administered questionnaire covered knowledge of ORT preparation, use, and storage. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25. Results: While 78% of respondents were aware of oral rehydration therapy, only 53% could correctly prepare the standard ORS solution. A further 31% persisted in using inappropriate home remedies. Maternal education, access to health education, and prior health worker counselling were significantly associated with correct practice. Conclusion: Substantial knowledge-practice gaps exist in ORT utilisation among caregivers in Ondo. Community health nurse outreach, pictorial ORS preparation guides, and integration of ORT counselling into child welfare clinic services are essential public health priorities. Keywords: oral rehydration therapy, diarrhoea, under-five children, Ondo, caregivers.
