Ontological Dimensions of Place Attachment and Territorial Identity in Oil-Producing Communities of the Niger Delta: A Phenomenological Geography

Oil production in Nigeria's Niger Delta has not only caused environmental contamination but has profoundly disrupted the ontological dimensions of place, territory, and identity for communities whose cultural and material lives were constituted through intimate relationships with land and water resources now degraded by decades of petroleum extraction. This study develops a phenomenological geography of place attachment and territorial identity in oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta, focusing on Ogoni and Ijaw communities in Rivers and Bayelsa States within the South South geopolitical zone. Drawing on the philosophical traditions of humanistic geography, particularly Tuan's topophilia and Relph's placelessness, the study theorises how environmental contamination ruptures established forms of place attachment and generates new hybrid identities formed through the experience of ecological dispossession. The research design employs in-depth phenomenological interviews with 90 community members stratified by age, gender, and livelihood type in six communities across Khana, Eleme, and Yenagoa LGAs. Photo-elicitation methods, community narrative mapping exercises, and participant observation over a twelve-month fieldwork period complement the interview data. Qualitative analysis applies interpretative phenomenological analysis procedures to generate second-order conceptualisations of place experience. Findings reveal three dominant ontological responses to contamination-driven place disruption: ontological mourning for lost ecological worlds, tactical re-enchantment of degraded landscapes through community-led rituals, and claims of environmental citizenship grounded in assertions of territorial rights. This study makes original theoretical contributions by extending phenomenological geography into resource conflict contexts and generating the first comprehensive phenomenological account of place experience in Ogoni and Ijaw communities.
