Organisational Culture and Administrative Effectiveness in Federal Colleges of Education in the North Central Zone

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the relationship between organisational culture and administrative effectiveness in federal colleges of education in the North Central geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Organisational culture, encompassing shared values, behavioural norms, and institutional practices, exerts a powerful influence over how administrative work is performed and how institutional goals are pursued. Federal colleges of education in North Central Nigeria, including those in Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger States, provide important teacher training functions whose quality is shaped in part by institutional cultural dynamics. The study adopts a descriptive survey design and samples 180 administrators, academic staff, and support staff from three federal colleges of education. A validated questionnaire covering organisational culture dimensions and administrative effectiveness indicators is administered, and data are analysed with mean scores, standard deviation, and regression analysis. The study is anchored on Schein's Organisational Culture Theory. Findings indicate that institutions characterised by cultures of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement demonstrate higher levels of administrative effectiveness on dimensions including staff management, resource allocation, and student services delivery. Hierarchical and compliance-driven cultures are associated with reduced initiative and weaker institutional adaptability. The study recommends culture transformation initiatives, including leadership retreats and institutional values workshops, for federal colleges of education in the North Central zone. Keywords: organisational culture, administrative effectiveness, colleges of education, institutional management, North Central Nigeria.
