Administrative Roles of Vice Chancellors in Driving Academic Excellence in Nigerian Federal Universities

This study examines the administrative roles of vice chancellors in driving academic excellence in federal universities in Nigeria. The vice chancellor occupies the apex of academic and administrative leadership in Nigerian universities, and the exercise of this role, in terms of academic policy setting, resource mobilisation, and institutional culture promotion, directly shapes the conditions for scholarly excellence. Against the backdrop of declining global rankings for Nigerian universities and ongoing debates about quality in higher education, this study provides a focused assessment of vice chancellor administrative conduct. The study employs a descriptive survey design and samples 200 academic staff, registrars, and student representatives from four federal universities drawn from the North West, South West, South South, and South East geopolitical zones. A validated questionnaire is used for data collection, and analysis employs mean scores and regression analysis. The study is anchored on the Transformational Leadership Theory. Findings indicate that vice chancellors who actively promote research cultures, prioritise staff development, enforce academic integrity standards, and engage in transparent resource management preside over institutions that score higher on academic excellence indices. Political interference in vice chancellor appointments is identified as a significant threat to institutional autonomy and leadership effectiveness. The study recommends the strengthening of appointment processes to prioritise academic leadership credentials and the development of performance benchmarks for vice chancellor accountability.
