📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Church growth research has identified pastoral leadership quality as a significant predictor of congregational health and numerical growth, but empirical investigation of this relationship in the South East Nigerian church context, with its distinctive cultural and denominational dynamics, is limited. This study empirically investigates the relationship between pastoral leadership quality and church growth indicators in the South East geopolitical zone. A quantitative survey design was adopted, with structured questionnaires administered to 350 church members from twenty-five churches across the five South East states. Pastoral leadership was assessed across five dimensions: vision communication, spiritual integrity, administrative competence, pastoral care delivery, and empowerment of members. Church growth was measured through membership growth rate, giving growth, community outreach expansion, and new convert retention. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypothesised leadership-growth pathways. Results confirm a significant positive relationship between pastoral leadership quality and church growth (path coefficient = 0.54, p < 0.001). Spiritual integrity is the strongest leadership predictor of growth (beta = 0.47), followed by vision communication (beta = 0.39). Administrative competence shows the weakest direct growth relationship. The study makes an original empirical contribution to the South East Nigeria church growth literature and recommends that theological training institutions in the zone prioritise spiritual integrity and vision formation as pastoral formation competencies.
