Petrographic Analysis of Granite Resources for Dimension Stone Production in Ekiti State, South West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Ekiti State, South West Nigeria, is underlain by a variety of basement complex granites and gneisses that hold significant potential as dimension stone for construction and decorative applications. This study undertakes a petrographic analysis of granite outcrops and quarry exposures across four local government areas in Ekiti State to evaluate their suitability for dimension stone production. Field mapping, structural measurement, and systematic sampling were conducted at each site. Thin sections were prepared and examined under polarising microscopy to determine mineral assemblage, grain size, texture, and the presence of alteration or fracturing. Physical and mechanical tests including compressive strength, water absorption, flexural strength, and abrasion resistance were performed in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials standards. Results indicate that the Ekiti granite suite exhibits a predominantly medium to coarse-grained texture with a composition dominated by quartz, K-feldspar, and plagioclase, meeting dimension stone specifications in compressive strength above 110 megapascals and low water absorption below 0.5 percent. Joint spacing and weathering profiles were found to influence block recovery rates significantly. The study recommends strategic development of three priority quarry sites based on block quality and logistics accessibility. This research provides updated technical data to support investment in the dimension stone sector and contributes to Ekiti State's solid minerals development planning.
