Physical Activity Levels and Academic Performance of Senior Secondary Students in Ibadan, Oyo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Growing evidence suggests a positive association between regular physical activity and academic achievement among adolescents, yet this relationship remains understudied in the Nigerian context. This study investigates the relationship between self-reported physical activity levels and academic performance among senior secondary school students in Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria. A correlational survey design was employed, with data collected from 300 students in six senior secondary schools selected through stratified random sampling. Physical activity levels were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire adapted for adolescents, while academic performance was measured through the most recent end-of-term examination results across five core subjects. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses were applied to examine associations and control for potential confounders including socioeconomic status and parental education. Results indicate a statistically significant positive correlation between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity participation and composite academic scores, with students engaging in at least 60 minutes of daily moderate physical activity recording mean grades 12 percent higher than their least active peers. Participation in organised school sports is identified as the strongest single predictor of academic performance in the regression model. Sedentary behaviour, particularly excessive television viewing and social media use after school hours, is negatively associated with academic outcomes. Recommendations include expanding school sports programmes, scheduling physical education during optimal periods, and educating parents and teachers on the academic benefits of physical activity.
