Professional Analysis of Marine Insurance Claims Patterns for Nigerian-Registered Vessels

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Analysis of marine insurance claims patterns provides valuable professional intelligence for risk underwriting, vessel safety benchmarking, and regulatory priority setting. This study analyses marine hull and cargo insurance claims patterns for Nigerian-registered vessels over the five-year period 2019 to 2024, drawing on claims data from three leading Nigerian marine insurance underwriters. A professional documentation review methodology was adopted, supplemented by structured interviews with eight senior marine underwriters and claims managers. Claims were categorised by incident type, vessel class, trade route, and causal factor, and loss ratios were computed by vessel category. Findings reveal that the combined loss ratio for Nigerian coastal vessel hull policies significantly exceeds the international benchmark for comparable vessel categories, reflecting the elevated risk environment of Nigerian coastal operations. Capsizing of passenger ferries, machinery failure claims, and theft of vessel equipment are the three most frequent claim types by volume. Hull claims related to collision with submerged objects are disproportionately prevalent in the Niger Delta waterway system. The study finds that inadequate pre-insurance vessel surveys and the acceptance of materially misrepresented vessel condition in policy applications contribute to adverse claim selection. Recommendations include mandatory independent hull survey as a condition of insurance for vessels above a specified tonnage, development of a Nigerian vessel risk database, and industry collaboration on minimum safety standards for insured passenger ferries. Keywords: marine insurance, claims analysis, Nigerian vessels, loss ratio, hull insurance
