📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
University theatre departments in South West Nigeria have a public responsibility to extend their cultural production and educational programming to communities beyond their campuses, and assessing current outreach efforts provides evidence for institutional policy development. This study professionally assessed university theatre outreach programming at the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Ekiti State University over the 2020 to 2023 period. A mixed assessment methodology combined documentary review of outreach programme records, structured interviews with 15 heads of department and outreach coordinators, and community beneficiary surveys administered to 150 participants in documented outreach activities. Assessment dimensions covered programme frequency, community diversity, thematic relevance, participation quality, and institutional resource commitment. Results showed that structured outreach programmes occurred at an average of 3.2 events per year per institution, below the minimum of 8 recommended in NUC community engagement guidelines. Community schools were the primary outreach venue at 67 percent, while rural communities received outreach in fewer than 15 percent of documented activities. Resource allocation for outreach programming averaged 4.2 percent of departmental budgets, below a recommended 10 percent baseline. Community satisfaction with outreach activities was high where they occurred, with 84 percent rating them as very valuable. The study concludes that university theatre outreach in South West Nigeria is valuable but significantly underdeveloped. Recommendations include NUC mandating minimum annual outreach standards, dedicated outreach budgets, and community partnership development with local government cultural offices.
