Professional Competencies of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Molecular Genetic Diagnostics: A Survey of Delta State Laboratories

The growing adoption of molecular genetic diagnostic technologies in Nigerian clinical laboratories demands a corresponding expansion of professional competencies among medical laboratory scientists (MLS). In Delta State, South South Nigeria, the readiness of MLS to execute molecular genetic tests accurately and interpret results reliably has not been formally assessed. This professional survey evaluated the molecular genetic diagnostics competency of MLS employed in private and public-sector laboratories across three senatorial districts in Delta State. A validated competency assessment tool covering theoretical knowledge, practical skills, quality assurance, and ethical handling of genetic information was administered to 120 MLS. Supervisors of participating MLS also completed an independent performance rating form. Mean competency scores indicated that theoretical knowledge was stronger than practical molecular skills, reflecting limited hands-on training opportunities. Quality assurance practices for molecular testing were particularly deficient. Younger MLS who had graduated after 2020 demonstrated modestly higher molecular competency, suggesting incremental curriculum improvements. The study recommends post-qualification short courses in molecular diagnostics and strengthening of laboratory continuing professional development (CPD) frameworks in Delta State.
