Professional Development of a Gas Sector Workforce Competency Framework for Nigerian Universities

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The alignment of university gas engineering education with industry competency requirements is a strategic priority for developing the professional talent pipeline needed to support Nigeria's gas sector expansion. This study develops a gas sector workforce competency framework for Nigerian universities, derived from a systematic analysis of industry skill requirements and an assessment of existing university curriculum coverage. The research employs a competency mapping methodology, combining structured interviews with senior gas industry professionals from 12 companies, analysis of job specifications for graduate-level gas engineering roles, and benchmarking against the UK Energy and Utilities Skills Register (EUSR) and OPITO competency frameworks adapted for the Nigerian context. The study maps identified competencies across five domains: gas production technology, gas processing and treatment, gas transmission and distribution, gas commercial and economics, and HSE and regulatory compliance. University curriculum audit findings are then cross-referenced with the competency framework to identify coverage gaps. Findings reveal significant competency gaps in gas economics, commercial contract management, and digital engineering tools (simulation software and data analytics) relative to industry requirements, while foundational thermodynamics and fluid mechanics competencies are well covered in existing curricula. Recommendations include mandatory industry placement components for gas engineering programmes, development of industry-co-designed elective modules for identified gap areas, and establishment of a Gas Sector Industry-University Competency Council to update the framework triennially. Keywords: competency framework, gas engineering education, workforce development, Nigeria, curriculum alignment.
