Professional Review of Islamic Law Education at Nigerian Law Schools: Relevance, Curriculum and Reform

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The Nigerian Law School's bar examination programme and the curriculum of university law faculties across Nigeria provide limited formal training in Islamic law and Sharia jurisprudence despite the significant proportion of Nigerian legal proceedings conducted under Islamic law frameworks in the northern states. This professional review examines the adequacy of Islamic law education in Nigerian legal training institutions and proposes curriculum reform. A professional legal education review methodology is applied, analysing Nigerian Law School Bar examination syllabi, NUC curriculum requirements for Islamic law components in law degree programmes, and conducting surveys of 100 law graduates practising in Islamic law-related areas alongside interviews with fifteen law faculty Islamic law lecturers and ten judicial service commission training officers. The study evaluates the depth of Islamic law content, practical Islamic court simulation training, Arabic language preparation, and professional development pathways for Islamic law specialists. Available professional legal education literature from Nigeria identifies Islamic law as severely underrepresented in Nigerian legal training despite its widespread institutional application. The NUC Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards for Law and the WANA accreditation standards for Islamic legal education provide the professional reference. Findings are expected to reveal critical curriculum deficiencies. Recommendations address mandatory Islamic law components in Nigerian Law School professional training, enhanced university Islamic law modules, practical Sharia court attachment requirements, and specialised postgraduate Islamic law programmes at Nigerian law faculties. Keywords: Islamic law education, Nigerian law schools, curriculum reform, professional training, legal education.
