Professional Underwriting Practices and Risk Assessment in the Nigerian Oil and Gas Insurance Market

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines professional underwriting practices and risk assessment methodologies employed by insurance companies operating in Nigeria's oil and gas sector. The upstream and downstream petroleum industries represent the most complex and high-value risk exposures in the Nigerian insurance market, requiring specialized underwriting competencies, actuarial expertise, and access to international co-insurance and reinsurance arrangements. Despite the strategic economic importance of this segment, documented analysis of underwriting standards, risk assessment tools, and loss control practices at the firm level is limited in Nigerian academic literature. This research employs a professional practice evaluation design with data collected from 35 senior underwriters, risk engineers, and energy insurance practitioners operating within Lagos-based insurance firms and brokerage houses servicing the petroleum sector. Structured in-depth interviews and self-administered questionnaires assess underwriting workflow, risk engineering visit frequency, use of Lloyd's and international market guidelines, and claims loss prevention measures. Qualitative content analysis and descriptive statistics are applied. Preliminary findings are expected to reveal significant reliance on international market standards and limited domestic risk engineering capacity. The research recommends investment in local energy risk engineering talent and NAICOM certification requirements for energy underwriting specialists. Keywords: Underwriting, Oil and Gas Insurance, Risk Assessment, Energy Risk, Nigerian Insurance Market.
