Profitability and Sustainability Analysis of Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Aquaculture Enterprises in Plateau State

The catfish aquaculture subsector has grown rapidly in Nigeria's food production landscape, yet systematic assessments of enterprise profitability and sustainability remain scarce in Northern states. This study conducted a profitability and sustainability analysis of catfish (Clarias gariepinus) aquaculture enterprises in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was administered to 75 registered catfish farmers across four local government areas: Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi, and Shendam. Data were collected on production costs, yield, prices received, and investments in environmental management. Financial performance indicators including gross margin, net profit, return on investment, and benefit-cost ratio were calculated per production cycle. Sustainability was assessed using a modified Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems scorecard covering economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Mean net profit per production cycle was 186,000 naira for earthen pond farmers and 241,000 naira for concrete tank farmers. Return on investment averaged 28 percent across all systems. Feed cost constituted 62 percent of total variable costs, with commercial pellet dependency identified as the primary profitability constraint. Environmental sustainability scores were lowest for farms with untreated effluent discharge and no sediment management plans. Social sustainability was constrained by limited access to credit and inadequate extension support. Profitability was positively correlated with farm size and market proximity. The study recommends targeted government feed subsidy programmes, farmer cooperative formation, and the adoption of integrated fish-vegetable production systems to enhance enterprise sustainability.
