Quality Management Systems and Operational Efficiency in a Cement Manufacturing Plant in Cross River State

The adoption of formal quality management systems in Nigerian manufacturing has expanded in response to regulatory requirements, export market demands, and competitive pressure to reduce waste and rework costs. This study evaluates the impact of ISO 9001:2015 quality management system (QMS) implementation on operational efficiency indicators at a cement manufacturing plant in Cross River State, South South Nigeria. A pre-post comparison design is employed, comparing operational performance data for 24 months before and 24 months after ISO 9001:2015 certification, supplemented by structured interviews with 30 quality and production managers. Operational efficiency is measured through defect rate per batch, production yield, equipment availability, order fulfilment lead time, and customer complaint frequency. Paired t-tests are used to assess the statistical significance of performance changes post-certification. Results indicate statistically significant improvements in production yield (4.2 percentage point increase), defect rate reduction (61 percent), and customer complaint frequency (72 percent reduction) following QMS implementation. Equipment availability improvements were modest and not statistically significant. The study identifies internal process standardization and document control as the primary drivers of efficiency gains, while management review and continual improvement processes are identified as areas requiring strengthened implementation. Recommendations include deepening QMS integration into supply chain management and conducting annual external surveillance audits. This research provides a professionally relevant assessment of QMS impact in Nigerian heavy manufacturing.
