Quality Management Systems and Patient Care Outcomes in Private Hospitals in Enugu State

This research examines the relationship between quality management system (QMS) adoption and patient care outcomes in private hospitals in Enugu State, Nigeria's South East geopolitical zone. The increasing competitiveness of Nigeria's private healthcare sector demands systematic quality management to ensure patient safety, service consistency, and institutional accreditation. This study employs a survey research design with data collected from 100 hospital administrators, quality assurance officers, and senior clinical staff across twelve private hospitals. Structured questionnaires and secondary patient record indicators were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression. The study evaluates QMS dimensions including standardised clinical protocol adherence, patient feedback integration mechanisms, staff competency verification systems, infrastructure quality auditing, and regulatory compliance management. Findings indicate that standardised clinical protocol adherence and patient feedback integration are the strongest predictors of improved patient outcomes, measured through readmission rates, patient satisfaction scores, and post-operative complication frequencies. Regulatory compliance management showed significant indirect effects by maintaining operational licences and attracting skilled clinical talent. The study also finds that hospitals with ISO-certified QMS processes demonstrate consistently superior patient care quality metrics. Recommendations include adoption of clinical quality standards frameworks, investment in continuous medical education, and establishment of systematic patient experience monitoring systems.
