Religion, Intercommunal Conflict, and International Human Rights Mechanisms in Imo State

Intercommunal violence in Nigeria, while frequently analyzed along ethnic lines, is also significantly shaped by religious identity dynamics, particularly in communities experiencing land use conflicts, chieftaincy disputes, and economic competition that become inflected with religious symbolism. Imo State, though predominantly Christian, has experienced localized intercommunal conflicts involving religious dimensions as well as farmer-herder tensions that have attracted international human rights attention. This study examines the role of international human rights mechanisms, including the UN Human Rights Council, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, and international NGO advocacy, in responding to intercommunal conflict with religious dimensions in Imo State between 2020 and 2024. A qualitative methodology is employed, drawing on human rights organization reports, UN Universal Periodic Review documents, and semi-structured interviews with community leaders, human rights practitioners, and religious organization representatives in Imo State. International human rights law and the politics of international norm application in African contexts frame the analytical approach. Findings indicate that international human rights mechanisms have generated meaningful documentation and naming-and-shaming functions in relation to Imo State conflict incidents; however, their practical impact on conflict dynamics and protection outcomes at the community level is limited by the absence of enforcement leverage over the Nigerian state. Local religious peacebuilding initiatives demonstrate stronger community resonance and conflict management effectiveness than internationally driven programs. The study recommends enhanced support for locally led interfaith peacebuilding mechanisms alongside international accountability engagement.
