📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examined the role of archives in supporting historical research at the Arewa House Centre for Historical Documentation and Research in Kaduna, North West Nigeria. Archives are irreplaceable repositories of primary historical evidence, and specialised centres such as Arewa House play a critical function in preserving the documentary heritage of northern Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from archivists, historians, and visiting researchers through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The study found that Arewa House held a significant collection of pre- and post-colonial documents, personal papers, and governmental records. However, access was constrained by incomplete finding aids, limited digital access options, and deteriorating physical condition of some collections. The study recommended the development of a comprehensive digital access portal, systematic preservation treatment for at-risk materials, and the creation of a structured research fellowship programme to increase scholarly engagement with the collection.
