Role of Educational Foundations Knowledge in Teacher Professional Practice in South East Nigeria

This study examines the role of educational foundations knowledge in shaping and improving teacher professional practice in South East Nigeria. Educational foundations, encompassing philosophy of education, history of education, sociology of education, and psychology of learning, provides the theoretical and contextual grounding for professional teaching. Despite its inclusion in teacher education programmes, the practical application of foundations knowledge in everyday teaching decisions has been questioned by school administrators and curriculum specialists. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data from 300 in-service teachers with varying initial education qualifications across 30 secondary schools in Anambra, Enugu, and Imo States. Application of foundations knowledge was assessed across dimensions of philosophical reasoning in curriculum choices, psychological insight in learner support, sociological awareness in community engagement, and historical perspective in educational reform discussions. Teacher professional practice was rated by school principals and education officers. Regression and Pearson correlation analyses were applied. Results reveal a significant positive relationship between demonstrated educational foundations knowledge and professional practice quality ratings. Teachers who could articulate the philosophical basis of their instructional choices and apply psychological principles to learner differentiation received consistently higher practice ratings. The study concludes that educational foundations knowledge is a meaningful contributor to professional teaching quality. It recommends that teacher education institutions in the South East strengthen the practical application strand of foundations courses and include foundations application portfolios in student teacher assessment requirements.
