School Safety Policies and Students’ Physical Wellbeing in Secondary Schools in Bauchi State

This study examines the relationship between school safety policies and students' physical wellbeing in public secondary schools in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. School safety encompasses protection from physical hazards, violence, sexual harassment, and health risks within the school environment. In Bauchi State, where school buildings are often in poor structural condition and formal safety policies are rarely implemented, students' physical wellbeing is significantly at risk. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data from 30 school safety officers, 150 teachers, and 400 students across 20 secondary schools in Bauchi, Misau, and Ningi local government areas. Safety policy implementation was assessed using a checklist of safe school standard indicators including structural integrity, fire safety equipment, first aid provision, sanitation facilities, and anti-violence protocols. Student physical wellbeing was measured using injury incident frequency, hygiene-related illness rates, and student self-report safety perception scores. Regression and correlation analyses were applied. Results reveal a significant positive relationship between safety policy implementation and physical wellbeing outcomes. Schools with documented safety policies and trained safety officers reported significantly fewer physical injury incidents. Sanitation facility availability was the strongest single predictor of health-related wellbeing. The study concludes that school safety policy implementation significantly protects student physical wellbeing in Bauchi State secondary schools. It recommends that the state Ministry of Education introduce a mandatory school safety standard certification process as part of school licencing and provide annual safety audit training for school safety officers.
