Role of Non-Governmental Organizations in Supporting Vocational Education in Bayelsa State

This study assessed the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in supporting vocational education in Bayelsa State, South South Nigeria. Given the limited capacity of government to fully fund and implement vocational education reforms, NGOs have increasingly been recognized as important development partners. The study used a descriptive survey design, collecting data from 25 NGO representatives, 60 vocational teachers, and 200 beneficiary students across 10 NGO-supported vocational programmes in five local government areas. Instruments included an NGO contribution assessment tool and a beneficiary satisfaction survey. Findings showed that NGOs contributed significantly to infrastructure rehabilitation, consumable provision, teacher training, and student placement services. However, programme sustainability was undermined by project-based funding cycles, limited coordination with government education authorities, and inadequate monitoring and evaluation frameworks. The study recommends that the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education establish a formal NGO-government vocational education coordination committee, develop minimum standards for NGO-supported vocational programmes, and integrate NGO-trained graduates into official credentialing systems. International development partners operating in the Niger Delta region should be engaged to provide multi-year funding commitments.
